For two weeks, you can share your thoughts and opinions on this vital issue before the consultation period closes on Tuesday, August 13. After this date, the Council will use the feedback received to develop a revised gambling policy known as the Statement of Principles, which will guide gambling regulations for the next three years starting in January 2025.

Consultation Will Address Variety of Gambling Venues

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that gambling establishments operate in a fair, transparent, and legal manner. One of the key objectives is to protect minors by prohibiting children from engaging in any gambling activities.

The consultation will address a variety of gambling venues, including high street betting shops, casinos, bingo halls, adult gaming centres, and family entertainment centres.

Currently, there are 35 gambling establishments in Sunderland that are licensed by the council, with 22 of these being high street betting venues. As a community, your input is invaluable.

The chair of Sunderland City Council’s Licensing Committee, Councillor Jill Fletcher, emphasizes the importance of hearing from residents:

“We always want to hear the views of residents, and this regulation of gambling premises is no exception. The views we receive can help shape and regulate what happens over the next three years.”

Council to Address Changes in Local Gambling Landscape

Since the last update to the Statement of Principles in 2022, there have been changes in the local gambling landscape, including the issuance of four new gaming premises licenses, mainly due to relocations, along with the opening of one new betting venue. Unfortunately, in that same timeframe, five premises have closed.

The principles laid out in the upcoming policy will be crucial for guiding the regulation of gambling in Sunderland. They aim to ensure that gambling does not contribute to crime or disorder, is conducted fairly, and safeguards vulnerable individuals from harm and exploitation.

Your Feedback Can Help Ensure Gambling Outlets Are Regulated

Taking part in this consultation process allows you to express your views on how gambling is managed in your city. Your feedback can help ensure that gambling outlets are regulated in a way that balances the interests of local businesses, residents, and the broader community.
