Three players from an Australian football club have been arrested following an investigation into alleged betting corruption during several A-League matches.
The arrests come after a probe by the Organised Crime Squad into claims of yellow card manipulation.
According to New South Wales (NSW) Police, a senior player at Macarthur FC allegedly received instructions from an individual, believed to be located in South America, to arrange for players to receive yellow cards during specific matches in exchange for financial gain.
The alleged manipulation occurred during games on November 24 and December 9, 2023, with additional failed attempts on April 20 and May 4, 2024.
Three players have been charged, with a fourth expected to face charges once located by authorities. The senior player involved has also been accused of paying junior team-mates up to A$10,000 (£5,250) to intentionally receive yellow cards.
A statement from New South Wales Police added: “Organised Crime Squad detectives are working with the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Sports Integrity Australia, Football Australia, Australian Professional Leagues, and the NSW Crime Commission as inquiries continue.”
Macarthur FC, meanwhile, said in a statement they are “shocked and aware” of the arrests.
“Integrity of our game is a foundation pillar and we will work closely with all relevant agencies on this matter,” it read.
“The club will make further comment if and when is required.”
The authorities said that they had set up a team in December 2023, assisted by the UK Gambling Commission, to investigate the alleged betting.
