Swansea City employee gets one year football ban for betting

Date:

A Swansea City employee has been suspended from football for a year after being caught making bets on his own team.

Huw Lake admitted placing almost 2,500 wagers on matches between 3 April 2018 and 24 September 2023.

The 61-year-old has been with Swansea City since 2004 and works as a player liaison officer.

He was also given a £1,500 fine in a ruling by an independent regulatory commission in March.

The FA appealed the body’s original decision to ban him from all football and football-related activity for nine months, claiming that was unduly lenient.

In May an independent appeal board agreed, raising the ban to 12 months.

It heard Mr Lake made “no fewer than 2,476 football-related bets of which, most significantly and seriously, 130 were on SCFC to lose”.

He gambled almost £92,000 during this time, losing just under 10% of his stakes.

Swansea City said the club “supported Huw throughout the FA’s proceedings and will continue to do so”.
