Member of the Senedd for Aberavon, David Rees MS, has teamed up with Associated British Ports to highlight the dangers of swimming in ports.
Divisional Port Manager Ashley Curnow hosted a visit for David Rees MS, to the inner dock at Port Talbot. The area has had recurring problems with young people breaking into the port site to swim in the water.
Speaking after the visit David Rees MS said:
“As we enter the school holiday period, we want everyone to stay as safe as possible. The port is not a safe place to swim. I am calling on everyone, particularly our young people, to stay out of the water in the docks and stay safe. The RNLI have some great water safety tips and I would urge everyone to read them.”
Ashley Curnow, Divisional Port Manager for Wales and the Southwest, ABP said:
“On a hot day, it might seem like a great idea to cool down in open water. However, swimming and jumping into the water in our ports, docks and harbours is really dangerous and strictly prohibited. It is trespassing to enter the port and the water.
“Docks are not a safe place to swim. There are risks from hidden dangers beneath the water, they are often busy industrial centres, and if you enter the water it is often difficult to escape from it. We would urge young people to stay safe and not enter the water.”
