South Wales Sports Grounds Limited Celebrates 60th Anniversary

Date:

In 2024 South Wales Sports Grounds Limited is proudly celebrating its 60th year of designing, building and maintaining sports surfaces. Since its founding in 1964, the company has played a pivotal role in developing and maintaining some of the most iconic sports facilities, and local grassroots installations, across South Wales and beyond.

The company was set up by the grandfather of current Managing Director, Sean McDermott, who took over the reins from his father in 2019, since when staff numbers and turnover have more than doubled. They now employ over 70 staff.

SWSG’s growth can be attributed to several factors not least of which are the strong values that are still rooted in how the company operates, and the innovation culture that started six decades ago that has been passed through the generations. Today SWSG caters to a wide range of customers, from local authorities, major contracting groups and education, as well as individual sports clubs.

Approaching the 60th year in business, SWSG has completed its largest ever project, a 16-acre facility at Llanrumney Sports Complex, and were Shortlisted in the SME of the Year category at the Construction Excellence Wales 2024 Awards.

Recent projects have included replacing the Wales national football training facility pitch at Colliers Park in North Wales, new synthetic surfaces and facilities for Hereford Athletics, a 3G pitch for Cambrian United FC and a sports surface at Whiteheads Primary School.

As part of their celebration SWSG has partnered with Sparkle, a charity working with children with disabilities and development difficulties, and their families. A series of fundraising events will be held throughout the year, culminating in a celebration dinner in December at the St Davids Hotel, Cardiff, for all staff and their partners, clients and industry partners.

Sean McDermott said,

‘We are committed to staying at the forefront of the industry and will continue to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions that meet the evolving needs of the sports community. With our excellent team and superb reputation with clients I am sure we will continue creating the very best facilities for the decades to come.’
