Powys: More jobs may go at Nidec Control Techniques in Newtown

Date:

A further 65 jobs could be cut at one of the largest private sector employers in mid Wales, in addition to nearly 100 announced earlier this year.

Specialist manufacturer Nidec Control Techniques, which began in Newtown, Powys, in 1973, currently employs 636 staff at two sites in the town.

The firm blamed the proposed job cuts, which are subject to consultation, on the “ongoing depressed global market conditions”.

It added that there would be some opportunity for redeployment into other roles in the company.

The company designs and manufactures variable speed drives which control motors for a range of uses including the car industry, lifts and the food and drink sector.

In 2017 the company was bought by Japan’s Nidec corporation, which operates in more than 40 countries.

In a statement, the firm said: “Nidec Drives is considering a proposal, subject to consultation with affected employees and employee representatives, to restructure staff levels.

“The proposed restructuring could lead to the loss of up to 65 jobs… employees affected by any restructuring decision would be offered a redundancy package.

“Nidec Drives will work closely with their employee action group and government at a local and national level to ensure provision of as much assistance and support as possible.”
