Photographer on solo boat trip vanishes off Wales —and turns up in Ireland

Chris Ellery, a keen photographer from Bristol, set off from Fishguard harbour in Wales last Wednesday on what should have been a pleasant solo boat trip to take pictures of wildlife and the sunset.

Instead, an engine failure led to a search by three aircraft, three coastguard rescue teams and five RNLI lifeboats, before Ellery washed up “tired but OK” two days later and 60 miles away in Ireland.

The 54-year-old from Bristol, who often goes on such trips, was supposed to return after one day. When he failed to come back and his family could not contact him, they raised the alarm. Rescuers scoured the coastline while Ellery’s daughter Kenzie began a social media campaign.
