Met Office issues new South Wales weather warning as more snow and ice forecast

Date:

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning which will be in place from 5pm on Monday (January 6) until 10am on Tuesday (January 7).

The warning will cover the all of south Wales including Newport, Monmouthshire, Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan.

This latest Met Office alert comes after south Wales endured a weekend of yellow and amber weather warnings as the area was hit by snow, ice and freezing rain.

What to expect from the yellow weather warning in South Wales

The Met Office said the new yellow weather warning was issued across South Wales due to “icy stretches and sleet/snow showers” which could cause “disruptions”, especially to travel.

The ice and snow associated with the yellow weather warning are also set to cause:

  • Disruptions to roads and railways with longer journey times (by car, bus and train)
  • Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

A Met Office spokesperson added: “Icy stretches are expected to develop this evening, due to ongoing wet surfaces following earlier rain and, in places, snowmelt.

“Frequent sleet or snow showers are also expected to affect Wales and parts of northwest England this evening, moving into southwest England, the Midlands and parts of southern England in the early hours of Tuesday.

“In addition to the ice, these are likely to produce snow accumulations of a few cm above 200 metres, with a small chance of greater than 5 cm above 200 metres in Wales.

“The heaviest snow showers may also produce temporary accumulations of 0-2 cm at low levels.”

How to prepare for the yellow weather warning in South Wales

The Met Office has issued advice on how to prepare for the yellow weather warning and the risks it poses.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

“If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

“Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.

“If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

The yellow weather warning will be in place across South Wales from 5pm on Monday (January 6) until 10am on Tuesday (January 7).
