Kellogg’s has announced plans to create 130 jobs at its cereal factory in Wrexham, North Wales, which is recognised as Europe’s largest cereal manufacturing facility. The company, now known as Kellanova, will invest £75 million into the site as part of this expansion.
Currently employing 350 people, the Wrexham plant produces popular brands such as Special K, All-Bran, and Fruit ‘n Fibre. This investment will enable Kellanova to transfer the production of Corn Flakes and Crunchy Nut from its factory in Greater Manchester, effectively doubling the Welsh factory’s capacity to an impressive 1.5 million boxes per day.
This move follows Kellanova’s announcement in May regarding the closure of its Trafford Park factory, which will result in the loss of 360 jobs.
Originally opened by Kellogg’s in 1978, the Wrexham factory now represents the largest single investment in UK cereal manufacturing in 30 years, solidifying its status as the leading cereal production facility in Europe.
Chris Silcock, UK managing director, commented: “By bringing together the manufacturing of all our major breakfast cereals at one site in Wrexham, we can make significant leaps forward in the efficiency, quality, and sustainability of our operation. We look forward to making Wrexham the home of our cereal production for many generations to come.”
The company has also stated that this development will lead to an 11% reduction in CO2 emissions through the implementation of two new production lines equipped with artificial intelligence. Additionally, it aims to utilise more raw materials, such as rice, resulting in a “10-fold reduction” in food waste, along with new packaging lines and upgraded production processes.
