This afternoon, Kate Middleton joined the royal family in welcoming the Emir of Qatar and his first wife, Sheikha Jawaher, for Qatar’s U.K. state visit. The Princess of Wales has been making a gradual return to work after announcing she completed her chemotherapy treatment in September.
For the formal occasion, Kate wore a burgundy coat dress by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. She accessorised with an elegant matching hat from Sahar Millinery, as well as a four-strand pearl choker and drop earrings. Her jewellery was a sweet nod to the late Queen Elizabeth, who previously owned and regularly wore the striking set. Indeed, the late monarch had been gifted the pearls during a state visit to Japan in the 1970s, before having them set with diamonds and transformed into the matching set by Garrard. The Princess of Wales completed the look with her hair styled up to ensure that her hat and accessories were the focus.

Kate also wore burgundy for her first event after finishing chemotherapy. She opted for a trouser suit for the early October meeting with a young photographer and her family at Windsor Castle. ‘A pleasure to meet with Liz at Windsor today,’ she and her husband, William, wrote on Instagram at the time. ‘A talented young photographer whose creativity and strength has inspired us both. Thank you for sharing your photos and story with us. ❤️ W&C.’
Kate stressed that healing is still her focus when she shared news of finishing chemotherapy. ‘Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus,’ she wrote on Instagram. ‘Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes. I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can. Despite all that has gone before I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life. William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling.’
Kate will have another major event this week, as the Princess is hosting her annual Together at Christmas Carol Service on December 6.
