Gibraltar will follow up their match with Scotland on Monday night with another clash against a team from the United Kingdom when they take on Wales. The match will take place at a neutral location at the Estadio Algarve in Portugal with kick-off scheduled for 17:00 on Thursday, 6 June.
Wales fans are unlikely to be over their nation’s play-off defeat to Poland in March and will feel they should be looking forward to a trip to Germany for Euro 2024. However, the consolation of a trip to play a team their side should beat comfortably may soften the blow slightly.
Gibraltar are currently in the midst of a 13-match losing streak and their hopes of ending that this week are slim.
How the bookies view it: Wales backed to win comfortably
Wales don’t go into many away matches as favourites to win, never mind to the degree they do for the match against Gibraltar. Bet365 have priced them as 1/50 favourites to win the match, while Gibraltar are 50/1 to pull off a huge upset. The draw, which feels as unlikely as a Gibraltar win, is priced at 20/1.
Recent head-to-head: 1-0 to Wales
Wales and Gibraltar have only ever met once before with that meeting coming in October 2023 at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham. Wales ran out as 4-0 winners with Kieffer Moore getting a double in what was a very comfortable night for the home side.
Gibraltar only managed one shot on target on that occasion, so that could be a target for them to beat this time around.
Players to watch: How will Dan James respond in a Wales shirt?
Daniel James has had a peculiar season, to say the least. On one hand, it has been the best season of his career from a personal point of view with 13 goals and eight assists. However, on the other, he has lost two play-off finals – one for Wales and one for Leeds.
To make matters worse, it was James who missed the decisive penalty in Wales’ play-off defeat to Poland and it was him again who squandered two late opportunities for Leeds in their date with destiny with Southampton.
Thursday night will mark James’ first outing since Leeds’ play-off defeat and his first Wales appearance since missing that spot kick against Poland. Therefore, it will be fascinating to see how he gets on.
Predicted lineups
Wales boss, Robert Page, may take this opportunity to see some fringe players given the level of opposition but either way, he is without Joe Rodon, Connor Roberts, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson with the quartet all missing from the squad due to injuries.
As far as Gibraltar are concerned, the same starting XI that faced Scotland on Monday night are likely to play against Wales.
Gibraltar: Hankins – Jolley, Olivero, Lopes, Sergeant, Britto – Ronan, Annesley, Walker – Scanlon, De Barr
Wales: Ward – Stevens, Davies, Mepham, Cabango Dasilva – , Ampadu, J.James – D.James, Johnson – Moore
Anything else catch the eye?
Although Gibraltar are often seen as one of the weakest teams in international football they have displayed a stubbornness in recent fixtures which suggests they have at least some defensive capabilities. They have gone in at 0-0 in each of their last three fixtures which makes under 1.5 first-half goals at 5/4 a tempting bet.
