The brand new Nations League campaign gets underway this week, with Scotland the only nation in British Isles team competing in League A, the highest league following their promotion and England and Wales’ relegation in the last campaign.

All teams will be taking part for the first time since Euro 2024, with Steve Clarke’s hosting Poland first up on Thursday night, before travelling to Lisbon to take on Portugal away on Sunday night, with Croatia the other side in their group.

In League A this time around, the top two finishers will progress to the quarter finals of the competition, the third placed team will partake in a relegation play-off while the team who finish last will suffer direct relegation to League B for the next campaign in two years time.

England, Ireland and Wales will all be partaking in League B for the current campaign, of which the league phase will run through until November, with the former two sides being drawn together in the same group.

England, under the management of new interim boss Lee Carsley, will travel to Dublin for his first game in charge before taking on Finland at Wembley on Tuesday night, while Ireland will also be hosting Greece.

Wales also have a new manager, with Craig Bellamy taking over from Rob Page following his failure to qualify for Euro 2024, and he will start his tenure with a home game against Turkey in Group B4 before a tough trip to Niksic to take on Montenegro, with Iceland the other side in the group.

In League B, top spot will secure an instant promotion to League A for the next Nations League cycle, second place will earn a promtion play-off, third a relegation play-off and a fourth placed finish will be playing in League C in two years time.

Northern Ireland will competing in League C, starting on Thursday with a home game against Luxembourg, before a trip to Plovdiv to take on Bulgaria on Sunday, and will play Belarus next month.

Michael O’Neill’s side will be aiming for a top spot finish and promotion back into League B, though would probably settle for a second place finish to secure a promotion play-off spot.

The third place team in League C stays put for the next campaign, while the two worst fourth placed teams across the division will be guaranteed relegation, with the better two bottom teams competing in a relegation play-off.
