One of Wales’ leading homebuilders has donated £1,000 to the Mayor of Barry’s charities of the year.
Persimmon Homes East Wales presented the cheque to Cllr Catherine Iannucci-Williams, who is raising money for her chosen charities; SHUA Trust Home & Sanctuary and Vale Foodbank.
SHUA (Safe House for Unwanted Animal) is a cat sanctuary run by a handful of volunteers, working in the Vale of Glamorgan, with a charity shop at 97 High Street in Barry.
Vale Foodbank, which opened in 2011, is a part of the national Foodbank Network, with six centres to distribute emergency food parcels into the community. The project was founded by local churches, working together towards stopping hunger in the local area.
Charities supported by past Mayors have included 2Wish, Mind in the Vale, Llamau, Vale People First, Young Minds, Vale Plus, Barry RAF Cadets, Barry Army Cadets, Barry Round Table, British Heart Foundation, Atal y Fro, The Intersensory Club, Wales Stroke Association, Barry RNLI, and many more.
Persimmon, which has a significant presence in the Vale, funds good causes across Wales with £48,000 worth of donations as part of its Community Champions initiative. Recent local recipients include Whitmore Bay Surf Life Saving Club and Rhoose Community Library.
Commenting, Persimmon Homes East Wales Sales Director Victoria Williams, said:
“Given our significant presence in Barry over the last few years, we were delighted to be able to support both of the Town Mayor’s charities.
“SHUA is obviously an organisation that is close to the hearts of people across the Vale of Glamorgan and Persimmon has a proud history of helping foodbanks in areas where we build.
“As we sell our final property at our East Haven site, we’re proud to be supporting these much-valued charities as we leave a positive and lasting legacy there.”
Barry Town Mayor, Cllr Catherine Iannucci-Williams, added:

“Both do incredible work in our community and across the county, so any funding that comes in for our charities of the year are greatly appreciated and will be put to good use by them.
