Can you wear bows like the Princess of Wales? You magazine editors try the trend that’s perfect for festive dressing

Date:

Even if you haven’t heard of the Coquette-core trend, you will have definitely seen its influence out and about on your local high street, as well as all over your social media feeds. It’s the obsession with all things girly. Think: pink, pearls, lace and (perhaps most popular of them all) bows!

Bows in all forms are everywhere right now. From shoes to hair accessories to jeans, there’s not an item of clothing that we haven’t seen them adorn.

As with most trends, our obsession with bows can be tracked back to the designer catwalks, with the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Miu Miu and Nina Ricci all championing the look in their AW24 collections.

Celebrities have also been leading the way, with Ariana Grande spotted in a pink Thom Browne hair bow during Wicked’s LA premiere. Similarly, Kate Middleton added an oversized bow neck scarf to a cosy winter coat for her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey.

Of course, thanks to their close association with presents and gifting, bows are the ultimate trend to try this festive season. Although those who prefer their clothes more pared back may have a little trouble embracing the trend.

We tasked YOU Magazine’s digital and lifestyle editor (and fashion maximalist), Sophie Hines, and fashion director and self-proclaimed minimalist Sophie Dearden, with styling their favourite takes on the bow trend. Read on to see what they had to say.

‘When we first were asked to focus on the bow trend I was very dubious as, for me, the trend can feel a bit twee. Lots of little bows, pastel colours and frou frou dresses – not my vibe. However, I saw this top and discovered that I do like the trend – as long as it is done in a grown-up way.

‘Paired with an evening-appropriate halterneck, as well as a sexy cut-out detail, the bows feel elevated and fun rather than tacky.’

Dress, £150, Club L London

Earrings, £195, Daphine

Shoes, £66, Amazon Fashion

‘I adore this Club L dress. It has such an old school, glamorous feel and is super comfortable. Not ideal for hands-in-the-air dancing, but maybe it will slow down my champagne intake. I think the giant white off-shoulder bow is so chic and elegant and the ultimate way to tackle the bow trend.’

Sophie Hines’ verdict:

Blazer, £69, M&S

Trousers, £170, Anthropologie

Heels, £90, Dune

‘There’s no such thing as too many bows, as far as I’m concerned – I’ve got bow cardigans, earrings, bags and shoes in my wardrobe. However, until trying this pair I’ve never had trousers with bows on, but now I’m a complete convert! What could be prettier?

‘I think the black tailoring gives it the right edge of seriousness to stop the whole thing feeling too twee. A big yes from me.’

Jumpsuit, £375, Nadine Merabi

Heels, £90, Dune

‘As a lover of bows, I thought there could never be such thing as too big a bow – although I did feel quite self-conscious rocking this jumpsuit look in broad daylight on Kensington High Street. However, it would be a good statement piece for a party. I particularly love the sparkly straps and wide leg shape.’
