Warrens Bakery has further expanded its presence in the travel sector with a new store at Cardiff Central station.
The latest outlet has created nine jobs in the local community and takes the bakery chain’s retail estate to 42, spanning the West Country, the Southeast of England, and South Wales. It follows other recent openings in train stations including Bath Spa, Basingstoke, and Slough.
Located in the main concourse of Cardiff Central, the new shop was officially opened by station manager Nathaniel Owen and Warrens Bakery’s head of travel, Katie Anderson.
“We are thrilled to officially open our newest bakery at Cardiff railway station, marking our second store in Wales,” commented Anderson. “Expanding into Cardiff is an exciting milestone in Warrens Bakery’s journey within the travel sector and marks our first travel store in Wales and the start of a partnership with Trafnidiaeth Cymru / Transport for Wales.”
Anderson said the company was “committed to bringing our traditional yet innovative baked goods to new audiences”, noting confidence that the new Cardiff shop would “build on the outstanding performance we’ve experienced so far with our existing travel focused stores”.
Estate expansion, refurbishments, and continued growth of existing sites contributed to a 10% increase in sales reported in its most recent financial accounts for the year ended 30 June 2023. Turnover hit £13.7m while profit before tax dropped from £2.7m the year prior to £459k. However, the 2022 figure was inflated by an exceptional item resulting from Warrens completion of its Company Voluntary Agreement three years earlier than anticipated.
Warrens describes itself as the oldest Cornish pasty maker in the world, having been established in 1860 in the town of St Just near Land’s End in Cornwall. Its range includes breakfast items, morning pastries, savouries, fresh sandwiches, and cakes plus fresh bean to cup coffee, while its digital rewards app – launched just over a year ago – offers customers savings of over £100 throughout the year via various discounts and deals on menu items.
