Funding available for sports clubs in Carmarthenshire after Storm Darragh damage

Date:

Not-for-profit organisations have until Tuesday, December 17 to apply for grants ranging from £300 to £5000.

The Storm Damage Fund has been set up for Sport Wales to help clubs with repair and replacement costs.

Shadow Cabinet Member for Resources and Environment, Cllr Kevin Madge said:

“Money is available after Storm Darragh caused a lot of damage by forcing games to be called off and damaging facilities. I welcome this grant. I urge any sports clubs who were damaged to apply.

“I don’t know how much damage is out there, but I think it will help.”

The written statement regarding the Storm Damage Fund was released by Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership, Jack Sargeant MS.

Mr Sargeant said: “The recent storms have not just damaged the buildings and pitches of our sports clubs, they have damaged what is for many, the fabric of their communities – places essential for our health and wellbeing, and a hub where people meet and socialise with friends and family.”

Storm Darragh caused havoc in South West Wales after Met Office issued a ‘danger to life’ red weather warning.

Last Saturday (December 7) between 3am to 11am, extreme wind with speeds of over 90 mph caused trees to fall and debris to fly.

Apart from damage to the environment, the storm caused much disruption with key Ammanford roads like A483 Wind Street and College Street to A474 being closed.

All sporting fixtures in Ammanford were cancelled, household waste recycling centres were shut and museums such as Parc Howards, Carmarthenshire Museum and Dylan Thomas Boat House were closed.

Pictures of the storm showed trees falling in the middle of the road, fences breaking, buildings collapsing, emergency services being called and towns deserted.

To assist locals with power outages, leisure centres in Carmarthen, St Clears and Llandovery remained open until 12am on Sunday, December 8.

Then, the following day, Amman Valley Leisure Centre, Llanelli and Newcastle Emlyn were also open.

All Actif Leisure Centres were open on Monday (December 9) to provide shower facilities, hot water and charging facilities.

Meanwhile, with help from Spill Response Wales, The Plough Hotel and Restaurant in Llandeilo set up two welfare rooms in their car park on Tuesday (December 10), offering hot drinks and a warm space.
