Traffic Wales preparing to close A483 viaduct as Storm Darragh set to hit

Date:

Yellow and amber weather warnings are in place across Wrexham and Flintshire from 3pm today (December 5) until 6am on Sunday (December 8).

Strong winds and heavy rain is set to batter the region, with gusts of up to 70mph expected and over 30mm of rainfall likely to affect North Wales.

As authorities prepare for the storm to hit, Traffic Wales has confirmed that traffic management is set to be undertaken regarding the viaducts on the A483 and A5.

Closures are set to be put in place tonight, ahead of a possible full closure in both directions on Saturday morning (December 7).

A spokesperson for Traffic Wales said: “We’re arranging traffic management on the A5 Ceiriog and A483 Dee Viaduct to prepare for high winds. Southbound lane closures in place from A483 prior to J1 from tonight at 11pm to support a potential full closure in both directions [on Saturday, December 7] at 6am.

“The traffic management needs to be set while winds are lower.”

Closures of the viaducts tend to spark huge traffic delays on roads in the surrounding areas.

The continued closure of Newbridge Road, the main link road between Ruabon and Chirk means that motorists are forced to take lengthy detours through Llangollen and Overton.

Previously, the closures have sparked traffic “chaos”, and if a full closure is in place this weekend, delays can be expected in those areas.
