Massive sinkhole appears in Merthyr Residential Area – Residents Evacuated

Date:

Following heavy rain from Storm Bert, a massive 50ft sinkhole has appeared between a drive and road on a residential housing estate.

Initial reports indicate that nobody was injured, although we understand that at least 30 homes have had to be evacuated, with Police, the local council and other agencies attending the site at Nant Morlais, Pant.

The Council issued a statement saying “No further help or support is needed at this time but thank you to everyone who has offered it.  Safety is our main priority.”

In a separate statement, South Wales Police said: “South Wales Police are dealing with an incident on Nant Morlais, Pant, Merthyr. The road is currently closed in both directions. Please avoid the area.”

The BBC spoke to local councillor David Hughes, who told reporters that it was believed that a culvert had collapsed and residents of the street had been evacuated.  One resident  told the BBC he had heard “rumbling and collapsing” and was concerned he could possibly lose his home, which is right next to the sinkhole.

At this stage, it is not clear how long the street will be evacuated for and the situation is ongoing.
