New gym plans revealed for Rhyl with focus on accessibility

Plans have been released for a new gym in Rhyl, which, if it gets the go-ahead, will be accessible to disabled people.

Simon Johnston of Elite Personal Training has applied to Denbighshire County Council’s planning department, seeking permission to change the use of Windspeed Ltd, at 115 Marsh Road, to a gym.

According to the planning application, there will be no changes to the current structure, apart from the use.

The site is currently empty and has been for over 18 months, having been previously used as an engineering workshop, and neighbours have been consulted.

In a planning statement, the company said: “Our business, Elite Personal Training, has been successfully operating in Rhyl for the past eight years, supporting over 2,300 local residents in achieving their health and fitness goals.

“However, our current facility has become unsuitable due to its deteriorating condition and lack of accessible features, which prevents us from serving members with disabilities. We have unfortunately lost clients due to these limitations, and the building’s landlord has been unwilling to make the necessary upgrades.”

He added: “A move to 115 Marsh Road will provide a modern, accessible facility that meets the needs of our members and ensures business continuity. If this change of use is not granted, we risk closing our business, which would lead to the loss of six jobs and an established service that has demonstrably improved the health and wellbeing of the local population.”

The planning application will likely be debated at a future Denbighshire County Council planning committee meeting at the council’s Ruthin HQ.
