Abergavenny Leisure Centre has been set up as a reception centre for those affected in the meantime, and nearby residents are being urged to keep their windows and doors closed due to excessive smoke.

People living nearby are urged to keep all windows and doors closed because of the smoke.

Conservative councillor Richard John described the fire as ‘horrendous’ and ‘heartbreaking’ on Twitter, and said: ‘Thoughts with all those affected by the horrendous fire in Abergavenny town centre tonight. It must be heartbreaking. Thanks to the emergency services and hoping no one is hurt.’
