Just the ticket! Millwall travel with Great Western Railway ahead of win in South Wales | GWR News

Date:

Millwall travelled with Great Western Railway ahead of their 1-0 win at Swansea in the English Football League (EFL) Championship on Saturday.

The Lions’ link-up with GWR supports the EFL’s Sustainable Travel Charter, launched last year to help the football community reduce its carbon footprint.

The charter aims to build support for more environmentally-friendly forms of transport and challenge the idea that flying – traditionally favoured by top-flight football clubs – provides a sustainable competitive advantage.

GWR Sales & Marketing Director, Amanda Burns, said:

“We firmly believe in the potential for change and are committed to offering a more sustainable alternative to short-haul flights for teams and fans alike.

“We know football clubs expect the very highest levels of customer experience and we’re delighted to have supported Millwall on their journey to Swansea.

“We have a specialist sales team ready to assist football clubs seeking to travel by train, which as we all know is a far more environmentally-friendly form of transport.”

Millwall Managing Director, Mark Fairbrother, said:

“For a number of seasons where fixtures permit, we have chosen to travel by train. This aligns with the principles we have set out within our own Lion Living commitment to environment and sustainability, and it’s also a relaxing way for the players and staff to travel to these fixtures. Having a reliable and cost-effective option here is a great alternative for clubs.

“It is great to see other clubs getting involved with this initiative, as part of the Sustainable Travel Charter. For us a club this is part of our longer-term plan on domestic travel, both to ensure we arrive for away fixtures in an optimum state, but also being mindful of the impact we have on the world around us.”

Last year rock superstars The Foo Fighters made headlines by choosing GWR to take them to Glastonbury Festival, where they were performing as The ChurnUps, while this year Billy Joel chose GWR to travel to Cardiff for the only European gig of his worldwide tour.

GWR remains committed to providing sustainable travel solutions and supporting efforts that contribute to a greener future. By choosing rail travel with GWR, football teams, fans and all travellers can play a vital role in protecting our environment.

As well as Millwall, the train operator has worked with Plymouth, QPR, West Ham and the Wales national team in recent seasons.
