Progress update as Four Highways project nears completion in Llangollen

Date:

The Levelling Up-funded Four Great Highways project aims to enhance the landscape and improve accessibility, interpretation and signage in Llangollen.

The targeted areas include the staircase leading up to the wharf from Abbey Road and the walkway at Lower Dee Mill Park. A section of the Mill Street carpark has been closed off to the public during this time for construction work access.

The project is part of an investment by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund that was secured through a joint application between Denbighshire and Wrexham Councils for the Clwyd South Constituency.

Construction for the new stairs commenced on May 7 with completion being pushed back on two occasions, once in June and then in August.

The latest deadline for completion given by the project team is late September which still appears to be the case according to images taken of the work today.

The Levelling Up application was supported by former MP for the area Simon Baynes and £3.8 million was allocated to Denbighshire to invest in the communities of Llangollen, Llantysilio, Corwen and surrounding areas.

Emlyn Jones, Denbighshire Council’s Head of Planning, Public Protection and Countryside Services, said: “This is another major step towards the completion of our Four Great Highways project which will help to improve the resident and visitor experience in Llangollen.

“The works on the stairs will help to achieve one of the project’s aims of enhancing accessibility in the area by providing a gentler route up and down the Wharf for pedestrians.”
