WELSH firm Envico Engineering has opened a new base in North Lanarkshire in a move that has created 20 new jobs.
The firm designs and manufactures glass reinforced polymer mouldings, including transformer cabinets and sub-stations, for the electricity, gas, water, and telecommunication industries.
With two premises in Wales, Envico wanted to expand and decided that a base in the north of England or Scotland would allow them to supply customers in these areas more easily and cost effectively.
Cumbernauld proved the ideal location, due to it being close to the motorway network, with suitable accommodation, and a reliable workforce. Envico is now occupying a 30,000 sq ft industrial unit Wardpark Industrial Estate and has invested £1.5 million to create the space they need for the specialist work.
North Lanarkshire Council supported the firm with a £50,000 capital expenditure grant to install a new extraction system, as well as assisting with recruitment and providing an introduction to the Business Gateway Lanarkshire service.
MD Alan Jenkins and his family moved from Wales and are now settled in Coatbridge. He said, “The company move to Cumbernauld has been very successful, allowing us to significantly reduce delivery costs for customers in Scotland, Ireland, and the north of England and, with less transport journeys, we have reduced our carbon footprint too.
“We have recruited 20 staff locally, providing full training, and as the business develops, we plan to create a sales team here. It’s important to us to use local businesses for transport and supply needs, helping to support the local economy.
“A new area of work for us includes covers and kiosks for electric vehicle charging points, and we are supplying a number of supermarkets and our Scottish base here in Cumbernauld will help us meet demand in this expanding market.”
Councillor Alex McVey, convener of the enterprise and fair work committee at North Lanarkshire Council, added, “We welcome Envico’s move to Cumbernauld, one of the many companies choosing the area to set up.
“Their experience of finding the right premises and the support they need highlights North Lanarkshire’s reputation as a premier location for business and industry.
“Over the last decade the overall number of businesses in North Lanarkshire has increased by 1,820 (18.2%) – significantly higher than the Scottish figure of 8.3%. We’re at the heart of Scotland with unrivalled transport links, a skilled workforce, and high-quality business accommodation and development land.”
