The Welsh Government is actively seeking feedback from industry stakeholders on potential revisions to the marketing standards legislation for free-range eggs and poultry meat. This initiative aims to address the current regulatory framework in light of evolving agricultural and health needs, particularly in response to bird flu outbreaks.

Under the current system, a 16-week derogation period is in place for free-range egg producers when the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales enforces a mandatory housing requirement for bird flocks due to bird flu. During this period, eggs can still be marketed as free-range despite the birds being kept indoors. This regulation is governed by the Eggs and Chicks (Wales) Regulations 2010 and The Poultrymeat (Wales) Regulations 2011.
Proposed changes would eliminate this 16-week derogation period, allowing eggs to maintain their free-range label even during extended compulsory housing requirements. Similarly, the current 12-week derogation for poultry meat, which permits free-range labeling despite indoor confinement, would be removed. These adjustments would ensure that free-range labeling remains consistent regardless of mandatory housing measures.
The Welsh Government’s call for industry views reflects a commitment to maintaining high standards in animal welfare and product integrity.
