Unforgettable three-mile UK beach with wild ponies and views to rival the Med

Date:

A golden, sandy shoreline just 18 miles from Swansea is an unexpected paradise that is so beautiful visitors think it could be anywhere in Spain, Greece or Italy.

Located at the western end of the stunning Gower Peninsula, Rhossili Bay is a three-mile expanse of sandy beach that runs along the cliff path towards the peninsula at Worm’s Head. The daily tides wash the sand to keep the beach spotlessly clean every day, ensuring that the unspoilt beauty of the area continues to amaze.

When the tide is out, the expanse of soft sand is perfect for picnics on the beach, while children play without a care in the world. The shallow waters are ideal for kids.

So close to the urban hub of Swansea, this beautiful dog-friendly beach is a world away from the daily grind. The dramatic coastline sets the soft sand apart from the rugged Rhossili Downs that tower up above.

Locals know that the further you head along the beach, the more it feels like you have rented your own private island, with plenty of private spots waiting for anyone willing to walk far enough. A walk up the hill offers breathtaking panoramic views and many visitors choose to book an overnight stay to catch a glimpse of the impressive sunsets.

The beach is beautiful all year round, but during the summer months, fields of sunflowers burst into bloom above the shoreline, adding a splash of vibrant colour to the coastal scenery.

Let’s not forget the wild ponies who call the Gower Peninsula home. The hardy Gypsy Cobs graze freely across the common land and meadows and add to the rugged beauty of the landscape.

Rhossili Bay has been voted TripAdvisor’s Best Beach in Britain twice. It’s also recognised as the third-best beach in Europe and ninth-best in the world.

The beach regularly features in Wales’ Best Beach top 10 and has been voted number one several times. It even made the world’s top 10 in 2014, ahead of beaches in the Seychelles, South Africa, Mexico, and Australia.

With a five out of five score on Tripadvisor, it is easy to see why this Welsh beach is so adored. One visitor couldn’t contain their delight, they said: “RHOSSILI is unforgettable. Visually stunning. Awe-inspiring. Visited the sunflower fields too which were in full bloom an extra special treat. The ponies joined us as the sunset, was just amazing.”

A second said: “Stunning, pristine, breathtaking. Acres of space and dog-friendly year round.”
