Manufacturer Launches Research into Bike Theft Trends

A Swansea manufacturer has launched a survey which aims to paint a picture of the true scale of bike theft.

LITELOK, which was founded in 2013 and offers the world’s lightest insurance-rated bike locks, says that approximately 71% of bike thefts go unreported.

They cite 2023 research which claimed that:

  • In 2022, 65,809 bike theft cases across England and Wales were closed without a suspect being identified.
  • Only 1,245 bike thefts reported resulted in a suspect being charged or summonsed – just 1.7% (1,245) of the total 73,979 cases recorded.
  • Nine police forces across England and Wales saw more than nine in 10 of bike thefts go unsolved.

Founder and CEO Professor Neil Barron said:

“LITELOK was launched because I know what it’s like to be a victim of bike theft. We’ve taken on the challenge of keeping up with thieves. It’s the reason we launched our X range, but that’s not enough.

“As a brand, our goal is to do everything we can to prevent bike theft. We know how much of a problem it is, especially in certain areas. We’re trying to gather data from as many people as possible. That way we can better address the issue and feed it back to others working towards tackling bike theft.

“We want to know if anything has changed and highlight potential improvements in bike security.”

The firm has also launched a motorcycle theft survey.
