The beautiful little village named one of the best in Wales

Date:

A pretty little village home to less than 1,000 people has been named one of the best in Wales.

Solva is on the southwest coast of Wales, on the edge of St Bride’s Bay in Pembrokeshire. It sits on the River Solva and has just under 900 residents.

It has been included in a list of the country’s prettiest villages by Conde Nast Traveller, along with others like Tintern, Skenfrith and Laugharne.

Conde Nast Traveller said: “In a deep inlet in the northern crook of St Brides Bay, Solva feels like you’ve been dropped into a Famous Five novel.

“Cottages in chalk-box pastels tumble down to the prettiest of harbours and a scoop of golden sand, seabirds wheel and screech on the breeze and the tang of salt fills your lungs.”

At high tide, the beach is a narrow strip and the harbour wall can be jumped off for hours of fun. At low tide, the harbour is dry apart from a stream where visitors can go crabbing and fish. There are rock pools to explore and the water is shallow for paddling.

The fishing village boasts five pubs and restaurants, three cafes, numerous boutique gift shops and galleries as well as a general store.

Reviewers on Tripadvisor said it is a “lovely town” and a “glorious harbour”. One said: “Don’t tell anyone about Solva, they will all come and spoil it.”

Solva sits in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and is neighboured by many other small villages such as St David’s, Newgale, Abereiddi and Roch.

There is lots to do and see such as the Blue Lagoon in Abereiddi, Southwood Estate near Roch, and a number of scenic walks with incredible views of the Welsh coastline.

Those looking to visit Solva can get there via train from Cardiff or by car via the A40. The village has a handful of places to stay and there is more accommodation in the surrounding area.
