10 Important Changes to Watch Out for in 2025 – And How They Could Hit Your Wallet!

Date:

Millions of households across Britain are set to feel the impact of sweeping financial changes in 2025, from energy bills to pension reforms. Fiona Peake, leading money expert at Ocean Finance, breaks down the updates that could affect your family’s finances – and shares tips on how to stay ahead of the game.

Energy Price Shake-up: “The energy price cap is expected to shift, and potentially increase, in April 2025. While wholesale gas prices have stabilised, many households are still struggling with their bills. Now’s the time to lock in a fixed tariff if you can find one below the current cap – some suppliers are offering deals worth considering.”

Council Tax Reforms: “Local authorities across the UK have been given the green light for up to 5% increases in council tax. This could mean an extra £100 annually for an average Band D property. It’s worth checking if you’re on the correct band, and if you’re eligible for any discounts, especially if you’re living alone or on a low income.”

New Income Tax Thresholds: “Income tax bands are set for adjustment in April, potentially pulling more people into higher tax brackets due to wage inflation. If you’re nearing a threshold, consider salary sacrifice schemes for pensions or childcare vouchers to reduce your taxable income.”

New Pension Rules: “State pension increases are locked in for April 2025, with payments rising by at least 6.7% under the triple lock. This means an extra £800 annually for those on the full new state pension, but don’t let this make you complacent about your private pension contributions.”

Mortgage Rates to Remain Unpredictable: “While the Bank of England has hinted at stabilising base rates, fixed and tracker mortgage deals remain in flux. If you’re on a fixed deal ending in 2025, start shopping around three months before your term ends – some lenders offer rate guarantees for that period.”

Digital Banking Requirements: “New Strong Customer Authentication rules mean changes to how we manage online banking. Make sure your contact details are up to date and you’re familiar with your bank’s authentication app.”

Changes to Personal Savings Allowance: “The personal savings allowance (PSA) could be reduced, impacting the tax-free interest on savings accounts. This is the year to shop around for ISAs or higher-interest savings accounts.”

Vehicle Tax Updates: “Vehicle Excise Duty rates are set to increase with inflation, while new emissions-based charges roll out in more cities. Electric vehicle owners should particularly note the introduction of road tax for EVs from 2025. Factor this into your calculations if you’re considering an EV purchase.”

Minimum Wage Rise: “The National Living Wage increase will affect both workers and businesses. While this means more take-home pay for many, it could lead to price increases as businesses adjust. Use any pay rise wisely – consider splitting it between immediate needs and long-term savings.”

Benefits System Reform: “Universal Credit and other benefits will see updates, with new rules around work requirements. Keep track of any changes to your entitlements. The government’s online benefits calculator is worth checking regularly, as you might become eligible for additional support.”

The Importance of Financial Planning Now

“It’s important to review your finances now and make adjustments before these changes kick in”, says Fiona. “To avoid feeling overwhelmed, start with the changes that will impact you most, whether that’s energy bills or pension contributions. Consider using budgeting apps or speaking with a financial adviser to create a personalised action plan. The most important thing is not to bury your head in the sand – stay informed and take action early.”
